Alicia Alonso. From the very beginning, Alicia Alonso has been recognized as one of the great ballerinas of the century. Her remarkable career began when she started dancing in Cuba at the age of nine. Her studies brought her eventually to New York and a position as soloist with the Ballet Theatre. Soon she had graduated to principal dancer. Her first triumph occurred when she substituted for Alicia Markova on short notice at the Metropolitan Opera House – her first Giselle. Before long, she was being hailed as the greatest ballerina in the Americas, a title which has followed her through the years. This film documents her life, but more importantly, it gives dance lovers of this generation an opportunity to see this legend at her craft in four favorite roles, as well as to provide older balletomanes with a priceless souvenir of performances past.
